On Thursday night, bombs tore through three casino sites in the southern Russian city of Vladikavkaz, the capitol of the province of North Ossetia. A fourth unexploded bomb was also found at one of the casino sites.
At least two people were killed, and more than 20 people were injured, according to the North Ossetia Health Ministry. One of the dead was a 25 year- old woman, and the other was a man. Most of the injured were young people in their 20s and 30s.
There has not been a claim of responsibility for the blasts, but provincial officials point to two possible motives for the casino sites bombings.
One possibility is terrorism. Russia is plagued by terrorism by separatists who reside in some of its provinces, including North Ossetia. North Ossetia is the site of Beslan, the town in which terrorists seized control of an elementary school, killing 330 people.
In fact, the entire region is a hotbed of separatist- related terrorism; South Ossetia, which borders North Ossetia, fought a bitter war with Russia in the early 1990s, and briefly declared independence.
However, others maintain that the bombings at the casino sites were the result of criminal wars over business. Casino sites are frequent targets of criminal violence in Russia; there were four bombings at casinos in Vladikavkaz last year.
